Jamkaran mosque is one of the most famous and biggest mosques, belonging to Shi'ite Moslems in Iran. Shi'ite moslems believe that, after Mohammad (the prophet of Islam), Ali (son-in-law of Mohammad) and his sons were successors of the prophet. These successors are called Imams (meaning "leader"). Each son of an Imam succeeded his father, and this continued until the twelfth and last Imam. Shi'ite muslims believe that he vanished and will reappear, bringing lasting peace.
There is a story told that he once appeared to a spiritual in Jamkaran mosque, many years ago. After this event, some pilgrims claimed that they also saw him there and so many others go to the mosque, hoping to catch a glimpse. Jamkaran is located in Ghom, a holy city which lies south of Tehran. Ghom is to Shi'ite muslims, as the Vatican city is to Roman Catholics in Italy.
